Description
Common name: southern globethistle
A member of the Asteraceae family Echinops ritro is native to southern and eastern Europe, and western Asia. E. ritro ‘blue globe’ is one of those gorgeous plants that goes with anything. The flower buds form from early summer with globes on stiff upright stalks. Flowers eventually take on a silvery violet blue colour. The flower heads stay decorative for a long time, both in the garden and the vase. Bumble bees love these. While the leaves look just like many thistles they are in fact not prickly at all. Plants are very hardy in full sun, and are drought tolerant.
