Description

Common names: Carnation, Clove pink

Dianthus caryophyllus are native to the Mediterranean region, though the extent of their natural range is unknown due to their extensive cultivation over the last 2000 years. The flowers are prized for their fragrance, delicate fringed petals and vibrant colours. They are particularly popular as cut flowers.

The plants are hardy too and easy to grow in full sun with good drainage. Plants are effective as groundcovers at the front of the border. Leaves are greyish green to blue green.

D. caryophyllus ‘King of the Blacks’ produces beautiful rich deep reddish-purple flowers on firm stems to 50 cm. Flowers are produced freely from late spring to mid-summer.
