Description

Common name: hot pokers, torch lily

Kniphofia are native to Africa. There are both herbaceous and evergreen species. All plants produce spikes of upright brightly coloured flowers above the foliage and in various shades of red, orange, and yellow with some varieties being bi-coloured.

Flowers of all species produce large amounts of nectar, making them very attractive to bees and nectar eating birds such as tui, korimako (bellbird), and tauhou (silvereye). Plants are hardy and prefer full sun and good drainage.

Dwarf Flamenco mix has narrow evergreen leaves 60-90 cm with the flower stems a little taller. These are seed grown and the colour is a mixture of red, orange, and yellow, though the orange appears to be dominant. Plants flower from Summer to early Autumn.
