Common Names: Tagasaste, Tree Lucerne
Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus palmensis) have many uses. They are popular as nurse trees for establishing natives providing shelter and nitrogen fixation to young plants. In areas where established natives are nearby they can provide a habitat that encourages Kereru to bring in native seed. Being nitrogen fixers (Legumes) they provide extra benefits to plants nearby – particularly useful in the home orchard. They are a useful fodder crop for animals (sheep, cattle, goats) with good levels of protein (18-25%). The flowers are attractive to bees, particularly bumble bees and to Kereru. Flowering usually starts from early winter through into spring. They are useful for erosion control, and are tolerant of drought and exposure. In free draining soils they can live up to 30 years.
You can find some more information on the Hawkes Bay Regional Council website about using and planting Tagasaste. Tagasaste are quick growing and bushy often attaining 4 meters two years after planting and can get up to 6 meters. Plants do not like wet feet and are moderately frost tender till established.
