Common name: scabiosa, scabious, pincushion flowers
Scabiosa are native to Africa, Europe, and Asia. There are many species within the genus both annual and perennial. Scabiosa flowers are nectar rich and very attractive to many insects including bees, butterflies, and moths.
Both the S. columbaria and S. atropurpurea species have had many cultivars developed for the home garden.
S. columbaria f. nana – pincushion blue forms tidy evergreen mounds gradually spreading out to about 50 cm. The flowers are held on stalks about 30 cm above the leaves and are very free flowering throughout summer and into autumn.
