Common name: Sabra spike sage
Salvia are the largest genus of plants in the sage (Lamiaceae) family, with nearly 1000 species. Salvias include shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals. Salvias are naturally distributed over three distinct regions of diversity: Central and South America ( approx: 600 species); Central Asia and the Mediterranean (250 species); Eastern Asia (90 species). There are salvias for every type of garden, and in many colours.
The Sabra spike sage is a herbaceous perennial native to Brazil. In flower the plant can reach up to 2 metres in a sheltered spot. The orange-red flower spikes will flower profusely from mid summer and well into autumn.
The flowers are enjoyed by a wide range of pollinators. Plants need protection from winds and frosts – Ours are thriving in a lightly wooded area despite some minus 4 frosts.
