The Ironweeds are particularly useful for late season colour and are very attractive to butterflies.
V. arkansana is native to the south – central United States. Upright stems with lance shaped dark green leaves though with a more sprawling habit than V. noveboracencis. Flowering starts from late summer into autumn. Flowers are thistle-like pinky purple clusters. Great plants for the back of a border and naturalistic gardens. Plants generally prefer moisture retentive soils though have some dry hardiness once established. Fantastic late season pollinator plants especially for butterflies.
