Description

Common name: Daylily

Daylilies are herbaceous clump-forming perennials growing from rhizomes. Daylilies are not in fact lilies at all. The ‘Day’ in their name alludes to the flowers which last a day. The leaves of daylily species are strap-like, long, linear lanceolate leaves and grouped into opposite fans.

Daylilies produce large showy flowers in a variety of warm colours throughout spring, summer and autumn. they are easy plants to grow thriving in full sun and well drained soils. They are attractive to bees and butterflies. Daylilies are also edible, and all parts can be eaten. Species and cultivars are variable in their edibility though so testing is advised. Please also be sure of identification and not confused with true lilies which are poisonous. For more information check out this article from “NZ Life”
