In the mint family – Lamiaceae – Big betony is native to the Caucasus, northeastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran. Big betony is an erect herbaceous perennial forming tidy mounds of scalloped edged green leaves and upright spikes of hooded purplish pink flowers. Flowers are borne profusely throughout summer. Plants spread slowly to about 30 cm and can reach 60 cm in flower.Plants are very hardy though prefer a little moisture on well drained soils. Flowering is best in full sun, though they will still grow well with a little shade.
Big betony is a great source of nectar for butterflies and bees.
