A native of the Mediterranean Rosemary is a tough plant for hot and dry regions of the country. Rosemary will handle cooler and wetter areas as long as the soil is free draining. Rosemary has long been used in cooking, and medicine. It is sometimes referred to as the herb of remembrance. The leaves pair particularly well with breads, Olives, garlic, potatoes, and lamb.
Rosemary is hard to beat for the bees. The flowers are a great source of nectar, and are perfectly shaped for easy access. They are also a particular favourite for the NZ blue butterfly.
R.officinalis ‘Tuscan Blue’ has strong upright growth that makes it very useful as a hedging plant. The gorgeous blue flowers can appear throughout the year, though the main flush is spring and summer.
