Description

Common name: Beardtongues, Wassuk Beardtongue

Penstemon are a large genus of flowering plants -about 280 species – mostly native to North America. Flowers are tube shaped. The distinctive feature of the genus is the prominent staminode, an infertile stamen. The staminode is typically a long straight filament extending to the mouth of the corolla, in some these are very hairy, inspiring the common name of “Beardtongue”

Most Penstemon form a durable woody stem with persistent basal leaves, some are full deciduous perennials, others are shrubs or sub-shrubs. Heights can range from 10 cm to as much as 3 meters.

P. rubicundus is an upright clump forming semi-evergreen perennial growing up to 1 meter during the summer and flowering for months. Light pruning as flowers finish will encourage more flowers.
