Description
Prunus persica ‘Takapau’
Please note we use a taller box to pack these, these are priced as for the medium box ($18 North Island Urban) these boxes can fit 2 peach trees plus a couple of smaller pots.
All our peaches are grown from seed. Seed is selected from healthy trees that grow well and produce tasty fruit. In our experience peach trees grown on their own roots do very well as long as they have good drainage and good airflow. The seed from these trees grow true to the parent plant with some slight variations in colour and ripening times. This is an advantage in the home garden and spreads out our harvests.
Our original ‘Takapau’ peach came from friends on the Takapau plains. These peaches were growing very well and producing great crops without irrigation and in an area known for strong winds. We often refer to this peach as the ‘lunchbox peach’ because its small size, means it will fit nicely in a child’s lunchbox. The fruit is free stone with white juicy flesh. Ripening here in Central Hawke’s Bay from early to late-February. Plants can start producing as young as 3 years and produce heavily most years. These plants are self-fertile.
