Description
Common name: Catnip
Nepeta is a genus of flowering plants which contains about 295 known species. They are native to Europe, Asia and Africa. Some members of the genus contain nepetalactone which binds to the olfactory receptors of cats, typically resulting in temporary euphoria hence the common names.
Most species are herbaceous perennial plants, but some are annuals. They all have sturdy stems with opposite heart-shaped green to grey-green leaves. Leaves are usually aromatic. Flower colour is more commonly blues, purples and lilacs but white and pink exists too.
N. cataria forms lovely, lush mounds of foliage. the flowers are profuse. Flower colour is the softest pink to white. Leaves can be used in both teas and salads. Plants are very hardy as long as they have good drainage. They will grow best in full sun but will handle light shade. This is a great filler plant for the perennial border and works well at the front or nearer the back. Will flower over a long period in summer till autumn.
