Common names: box honeysuckle, Wilson’s honeysuckle.
Lonicera nitida is a popular hedging and Topiary plant. It is a broad leaf evergreen shrub with small dark green leaves. If left un-pruned plants will grow to 1.5 x 1.8 meters. Branches will form a lovely layered effect and are effective as ground cover too. Flowers are small creamy white and fragrant followed by bluish purple berries if left un-pruned.
L. nitida is moderately fast growing in most NZ conditions. Plants prefer full sun to light shade with fertile well-drained soils. The small leaves and horizontal layered stems lend themselves to shaping very well. They are useful as structural plants in perennial borders, and to separate garden zones.
