Description
Common names: dense blazing star, prairie feather, gayfeather, button snake wort
An herbaceous perennial native to Eastern North America. The plants grow naturally in moist prairies and meadows. Liatris form clumps of finely textured foliage with upright flower spikes of pale purple flowers appearing from mid-summer through to autumn. The bottlebrush like flowers open from the top down.
Plants do best in full sun and while their natural habitat is moist, they do not like wet feet, especially in winter when they are dormant. They are tolerant of drier soils once established but are best with regular watering in their first year. Great as cut flowers with a long vase life. Attractive to pollinators including butterflies and bees as well as nectar feeding birds.
