Figs are small deciduous trees or large shrubs that can grow to 10 meters. The leaves are large with 3-5 deep lobes. Fruit usually ripens from late summer to early autumn. They are native to the Mediterranean and prefer very good drainage, hot summers, and mild winters. Some frost protection needed during establishment. Plants respond well to hard pruning and fruit on new wood.

‘Black Mission’ (also known as ‘Brunero Black’) is so far at least my favourite variety for eating. Fruit is small with a distinctive purplish black skin and deep strawberry coloured flesh with a rich jammy flavour. Trees produce both a light breba crop in summer and a larger autumn crop – though removing the breba crop when small can help to encourage a better main crop.
