Description

Common names: nodding onion, lady’s leek

Allium cernum is native to the deciduous woodlands and grasslands of much of North America. A. cernum is an herbaceous perennial bulb. Each bulb forms several thin and flat grass like leaves and a single flowering stem. The flowers are nodding umbels of white or pink bell-shaped flowers which flower from mid to late summer. Over time each bulb will form dense clusters which are offsets of the parent bulbs.

Plants prefer good drainage in full sun or light shade. In hotter parts of the country, they will do best with some shade from afternoon summer sun. They are attractive to a wide range of pollinators.
