Description
Common name: golden variegated sweet flag
The sweet flag is native to China, Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines.
A great plant for pond and bog gardens or anywhere with wet soils. Plants form clumps of gracefully arching sword-shaped golden leaves. They are slowly spreading rhizomatous plants that make fantastic groundcover round the edge of ponds and are effective at lighting up shady spots. It can also be planted in baskets in shallow water. The foliage is sweetly fragrant when bruised hence the common name. They form inconspicuous yellow-green flowers from spring to early summer followed by tiny reddish berries.
A very low maintenance plant – most of mine have been slowly filling a large trough with no care at all other than topping up the water occasionally.
